Build a weekday plan before allowing for closures

A contractor planning a month of work needs to know how many Monday–Friday dates fit inside the project window. Counting all calendar days would include weekends, while assuming four working weeks can miss extra dates at the end of the month.

This calculator supplies the weekday calendar first. It includes public holidays and does not remove leave, closures or unavailable staff. Treat the total as a starting pool of dates, not a promise of productive workdays.

Choose dates that match the project window

  1. Use This year, the initial preset, for annual planning. Choose This month, Remaining this year or edit Start date and End date for a shorter window.
  2. Leave both endpoints included when work can happen on those dates. Exclude a start or end date under Advanced: date boundaries when the project agreement leaves it out.
  3. Check the overall count, then review Matching dates by month and year. Monthly totals cover the selected range; long lists use Previous and Next to show 60 dates at a time.

Results update with the inputs. Calculate directs you to a date needing correction. Reset restores the current year with both boundaries included. Remaining this year begins on the displayed UTC date, rather than on the first of the month.

Example: a project running through August 2026

Enter August 1 through August 31, 2026, inclusive. August 1 is Saturday, so the first weekday is Monday, August 3. The month contains four complete Monday–Friday blocks followed by Monday, August 31.

Four blocks give 20 weekdays and the final Monday adds one, giving 21. If the project must finish before August 31, exclude the end date and the total becomes 20. Any holiday or planned shutdown inside the range still needs to be removed from your operational schedule separately.

How the Monday–Friday count is calculated

After applying the boundary exclusions, count each weekday sequence separately: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Add those five integer counts. Saturdays and Sundays never contribute, and a named public holiday still contributes if it falls on Monday through Friday.

For July 3–6, 2026, the included dates are Friday, July 3 and Monday, July 6. The Saturday and Sunday between them are skipped. Excluding both boundaries leaves zero weekdays, even though the range still contains two calendar dates.

Use monthly totals without losing the overall count

The main result is the number of weekdays across the whole range. First and Last identify the earliest and latest included weekdays. Within Matching dates, a heading such as August 2026 shows that month’s total inside your selected range.

Only 60 exact dates are shown per page. A month can continue onto the next page, while its heading still reports the complete selected-month total. The year in each heading keeps two Januaries from different years separate.

A full 2026 contains 261 weekdays: 52 complete weeks contribute 260, and the extra Thursday contributes one. February 2024 contains 21 weekdays, including Thursday, February 29. Use the actual dates when estimating another year or leap month.

Check what “working day” means for your task

Monday–Friday is a calendar convention, not a universal working pattern. An organization that operates Saturdays, observes a different weekend or closes for local holidays needs additional scheduling decisions. This tool has no holiday database or custom workweek setting.

Dates use UTC calendar arithmetic, so daylight saving changes cannot change how many weekdays fit. Near midnight, the displayed UTC date may differ from your local date. Enter your intended custom boundaries when that difference matters.

Questions about weekdays

Does the calculator exclude public holidays?

No. It excludes Saturdays and Sundays only. Subtract a closure only when it is a weekday in the selected range, and avoid subtracting the same date twice.

Can a weekend-only range return zero?

Yes. A Saturday–Sunday range contains no Monday–Friday dates. A valid zero remains visible and has no First or Last weekday.

Can I calculate a legal deadline with this?

This is a calendar count, not a deadline-rule tool. It does not apply jurisdiction-specific holidays, service rules or cutoff times. Use the rules governing your actual deadline.

Can I include Saturday as a working day?

Not in this tool’s Monday–Friday total. The Saturdays Calculator can count those dates separately using the same boundaries, if your own schedule requires them.
